What it means
A general circuit fault is detected on the fuel fill door position sensor or switch - the ECU cannot determine whether the door is open or closed. Usually an open in supply, signal or ground.
How it works
The fuel-fill door position switch sends an electrical signal that lets the control module determine whether the door is open or closed. P04B8 sets when the module detects a general fault in that sensor circuit and cannot reliably determine the door position. The code does not by itself identify whether the problem is the switch, wiring, supply, or ground.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or short in sensor wiring
- Loose or corroded connector
- Failed position sensor or switch
Symptoms
- Fuel-fill door status may be unavailable or incorrect
- Door may not release or lock as expected
How to diagnose it
- Read live fuel-door position data and check whether it is missing or disagrees with the door's actual position.
- Inspect the position-switch connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, broken insulation, or disconnected plugs.
- Check the circuit's supply, ground, and signal at the switch using the manufacturer's specification.
- Check continuity and shorts in the sensor wiring between the switch and control module, with the circuit safely isolated as specified by the manufacturer.
- Test the position switch and confirm its output changes as the door moves before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose plug or clean and repair corroded terminals.
- Repair an open or shorted section of the position-sensor wiring.
- Replace the fuel-fill door position switch if its output is faulty with a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is usually safe, but the vehicle may not show the correct fuel-door status or may not release or lock the door as expected. Check that the door is secure before setting off.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
