OBD-II fault code

P04B6: Fuel Fill Door Stuck Closed

What it means

Same as P04B5 with the door stuck closed - the user cannot refuel until the fault is cleared.

How it works

On vehicles with a motorised fuel-fill door, the actuator releases or moves the door and a position switch reports its position. The control module checks whether the door opens after a release command. P04B6 sets when the door remains closed and fails to reach the requested open position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Latch jammed or actuator stalled
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Fuel fill door may not open for refueling
  • Fuel door warning may appear, if equipped
  • Fuel door release may fail to respond
  • Check engine light may come on

How to diagnose it

  1. Check scan-tool fuel-door status and stored data to confirm that the door was reported closed after an open command.
  2. Inspect the door edge, latch, and hinge for ice or debris that could prevent release.
  3. Check the release control and actuator connector for loose connections, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
  4. Use the owner's manual to locate any approved emergency release and confirm whether the door can be released without forcing it.
  5. Command the actuator with a scan tool, if supported, and test its operation and position-switch feedback against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Remove ice or debris from the latch and hinge so the door can release.
  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged actuator wiring and connectors.
  • Repair or replace a stalled actuator or damaged latch linkage.
  • Replace a failed position switch if the door opens but its reported position remains closed.

Can I keep driving?

You can drive, but you may be unable to refuel until the door releases. Do not pry it open, since that can damage the door or latch; use only an emergency release described in the owner's manual.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
