OBD-II fault code

P04A6: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve B Position Sensor/Switch Circuit

What it means

A circuit fault is detected on the position sensor of exhaust pressure control valve B. Without valid position feedback the ECU cannot run closed-loop control of the valve and falls back to a default substitute.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

A position sensor reports the angle of exhaust pressure control valve B so the control module can regulate its movement. P04A6 means the sensor circuit has a fault and the module cannot rely on that position feedback, so it may use a fallback strategy.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failure
  2. Open or shorted sensor wiring
  3. Loose or corroded connector
  4. Fault in the valve or control circuit

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
  • Engine may take longer to warm up or have reduced performance
  • Exhaust braking may be reduced, if equipped

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related actuator or sensor-supply codes before clearing the fault.
  2. Inspect the valve B position-sensor connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, chafing or heat damage.
  3. Check the sensor power, ground and signal circuits against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Watch valve B position data while moving the connector and harness gently to identify an intermittent connection.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test the position sensor and valve B assembly using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the valve B sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged or shorted position-sensor wiring.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace the valve B position sensor or assembly if circuit tests confirm sensor failure.

Can I keep driving?

Gentle driving may be possible if the vehicle responds normally, but valve B control or exhaust braking may be limited. Avoid heavy loads and steep descents if equipped with exhaust braking, and stop if power loss becomes severe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
