OBD-II fault code

P04A9: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve B Position Sensor/Switch Circuit High

What it means

Same as P04A6 with the signal voltage above the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The position sensor on exhaust pressure control valve B reports its angle to the control module. P04A9 means the sensor signal is above the plausible range, which can happen if the signal wire is shorted to a supply or the connector is damaged.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to supply
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
  • Engine may take longer to warm up or have reduced performance
  • Exhaust braking may be reduced, if equipped

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related sensor-supply or valve B circuit codes.
  2. Inspect the valve B position-sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, chafing or contact with a power source.
  3. Check the signal wire for a short to supply voltage, using the wiring diagram and the manufacturer's test procedure.
  4. Watch live valve B position data while gently moving the harness and connector to see whether the high reading changes.
  5. If the wiring passes, test sensor supply, ground and signal circuits against the manufacturer's specification before condemning the sensor.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the valve B sensor connector.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to supply voltage or pinched against a power source.
  • Clean or replace damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace the valve B position sensor or assembly if the signal remains high with sound wiring and connections.

Can I keep driving?

Gentle driving may be possible if power and response are normal, but valve B control and exhaust braking may be unreliable. Avoid heavy loads and steep descents if equipped, and stop if power loss becomes severe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
