What it means
Same as P04A4 but the valve B is stuck closed - back-pressure stays high even when the engine should run with low restriction; risk of overheating or excessive fuel consumption.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Exhaust pressure control valve B regulates exhaust restriction and should open when the engine needs a less restricted exhaust path. The control module monitors its command and position feedback. P04A5 sets when valve B remains closed despite a command to open, leaving exhaust restriction higher than intended.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve stuck closed due to soot or broken linkage
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Engine may take longer to warm up or have reduced performance
- Exhaust braking may be reduced, if equipped
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check the commanded and reported positions of valve B when the fault occurred.
- With the engine off and cool, inspect valve B and its linkage for soot, debris, damage or binding that could hold it closed.
- Inspect the valve B connector and harness for damage that could prevent the actuator from receiving an opening command.
- Use a scan tool to command valve B open and watch for movement and a change in position feedback.
- If electrical commands reach the actuator but the valve does not move, inspect its mechanical operation using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean soot or debris binding valve B if permitted by the manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair damaged or disconnected valve B linkage.
- Repair a wiring or connector fault that prevents the valve from opening.
- Replace a stuck valve B or failed actuator after confirming it cannot move correctly.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy loads and sustained high-speed driving because a closed valve can increase exhaust restriction, heat and fuel use. Stop driving if power loss is severe or the engine shows signs of overheating.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
