OBD-II fault code

P04A8: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve B Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P04A6 with the signal voltage below the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The position sensor on exhaust pressure control valve B sends a signal that lets the module track the valve's angle. P04A8 means that signal is below the plausible range, which can result from a signal short to ground or a poor connection in the sensor circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
  • Engine may take longer to warm up or have reduced performance
  • Exhaust braking may be reduced, if equipped

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related sensor-supply or valve B circuit codes.
  2. Inspect the valve B position-sensor connector for water, corrosion, pushed-back pins or poor terminal contact.
  3. Check the sensor signal wire for chafing or a short to ground, paying attention to harness sections near hot or moving parts.
  4. Watch valve B sensor data while gently wiggling the harness and connector to see whether the low signal changes.
  5. Measure sensor supply, ground and signal circuits against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the valve B sensor connector and restore a secure terminal fit.
  • Clean or replace corroded terminals or a water-damaged connector.
  • Repair the valve B sensor signal wire where it is shorted to ground or chafed.
  • Replace the position sensor or valve B assembly if the signal remains low with sound wiring and connections.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently only if the vehicle responds normally; the module may not be able to control valve B accurately, reducing performance or exhaust braking. Avoid heavy loads and steep descents if equipped, and stop if power loss becomes severe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
