What it means
The control module monitors the electrical circuit for exhaust pressure control valve B. It sets this code when the circuit voltage is above the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The actuator circuit controls exhaust pressure control valve B, which changes restriction in the exhaust. The control module monitors the circuit voltage and sets P04A2 when it rises above the expected range, often because the circuit is open or shorted to a supply.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in the valve control circuit
- Short to supply voltage
- Damaged or loose connector
- Faulty valve actuator
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Engine may take longer to warm up or have reduced performance
- Exhaust braking may be reduced, if equipped
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related valve B circuit codes to identify when the high-voltage fault occurred.
- Inspect the valve B connector and harness for loose or backed-out pins, corrosion, heat damage or chafing.
- Measure voltage in the valve B control circuit with the fault present and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- Use the wiring diagram to check for an open circuit or a short from the control wire to a supply voltage.
- If the harness and connector pass, test the valve B actuator and its circuit connection using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or secure a loose valve B connector.
- Repair an open or shorted valve B control wire.
- Clean or replace damaged connector terminals.
- Replace the valve B actuator if testing confirms an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle behaves normally, drive gently to a repair location; valve B may not provide its usual performance or exhaust braking. Avoid heavy loads and steep descents, and stop if power loss becomes severe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
