OBD-II fault code

P0478: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A High

What it means

The exhaust pressure control valve A circuit signal is higher than expected. Possible causes include a wiring or connector fault, an actuator fault, or a control-module issue.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Exhaust pressure control valve A changes exhaust flow to help create backpressure, which can support exhaust braking or DPF operation on equipped vehicles. The control module monitors the valve’s electrical circuit and sets P0478 when its signal is higher than expected, such as from a short to voltage or a failed actuator.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to voltage in valve control wiring
  2. Exhaust pressure control valve actuator failure
  3. Corroded or loose connector
  4. Fault in the control module

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Reduced exhaust-brake performance, if equipped
  • Possible reduced engine power
  • DPF regeneration problems or warning, where equipped

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live data for valve A to confirm when the high signal occurs and whether it is constant.
  2. With the ignition off, inspect valve A’s connector and harness for loose or corroded pins, damaged insulation, or contact with a power source.
  3. Check the valve A wiring for a short to voltage using the vehicle wiring diagram and the manufacturer’s test procedure.
  4. Test the valve A actuator and its circuit for continuity and operation according to the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. Consider a control-module fault only after the wiring, connector, and actuator have passed their checks.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded valve A connector.
  • Repair valve A wiring that is shorted to voltage.
  • Replace the exhaust pressure control valve A actuator if it fails testing.
  • Repair or replace the control module if its fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

Drive cautiously only if engine temperature and power remain normal; avoid heavy loads and prolonged idling. Reduced exhaust braking or DPF regeneration may worsen, and reduced power can make driving unsafe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
