What it means
Same as P049F with feedback in plausible range yet not matching the engine model - actuator slow, slipping or position sensor offset.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Exhaust pressure control valve B changes exhaust restriction to help manage engine operation and, on some vehicles, exhaust braking. The control module compares the valve’s feedback with the position or response expected from its engine model. It sets P04A0 when the feedback remains plausible but valve B responds too slowly or does not track the expected position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator slow due to soot
- Gearing slipping
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Engine may take longer to warm up or have reduced performance
- Exhaust braking may be reduced, if equipped
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and reported positions for valve B to see when tracking first diverges.
- Inspect valve B, its linkage and nearby exhaust components for soot buildup, binding or visible damage.
- Check the valve B actuator connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, heat damage or chafing.
- Use a scan tool to command valve B through its range and watch for delayed, incomplete or inconsistent movement.
- If movement is smooth but feedback remains offset, check the position sensor and linkage alignment using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean soot or debris from valve B if the manufacturer's service procedure allows it.
- Repair damaged wiring or secure a loose connector at valve B.
- Repair or replace a slipping or damaged valve B linkage or actuator.
- Replace a faulty valve B position sensor or valve assembly after confirming the feedback offset.
Can I keep driving?
If power and response are close to normal, limit strenuous driving and arrange diagnosis soon; avoid relying on exhaust braking if equipped. Stop if power loss becomes severe or the vehicle shows signs of overheating.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
