What it means
The control module monitors the electrical circuit for exhaust pressure control valve B. It sets this code when the circuit voltage is below the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Exhaust pressure control valve B is operated by an actuator, and its control circuit carries the electrical command used to move the valve. The control module monitors that circuit and sets P04A1 when its voltage falls below the expected range, which can prevent valve B from responding correctly.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to ground in the valve control circuit
- Damaged or chafed wiring
- Corroded or loose connector
- Faulty valve actuator
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Engine may take longer to warm up or have reduced performance
- Exhaust braking may be reduced, if equipped
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related valve or power-supply codes before clearing anything.
- Inspect valve B's connector and harness for chafing, corrosion, loose terminals or contact with hot exhaust parts.
- With the fault present, measure the valve B control-circuit voltage and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- Check for a short to ground in the valve B control wire, isolating the actuator and module as directed by the wiring diagram.
- If the wiring and connections pass, test the valve B actuator according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure a loose valve B connector.
- Repair chafed or shorted valve B wiring.
- Clean or replace corroded connector terminals.
- Replace the valve B actuator if circuit tests confirm it is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive gently if the vehicle runs normally, but reduced power, slower warm-up or loss of exhaust braking may occur. Avoid heavy loads and steep descents until valve B is working correctly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
