OBD-II fault code

P0476: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A Range/Performance

What it means

Exhaust pressure control valve A is electrically OK but does not move as commanded.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Exhaust pressure control valve A changes exhaust backpressure when commanded, including for exhaust braking or DPF regeneration on equipped vehicles. This code sets when the electrical command appears acceptable but the valve's movement or effect does not match what the control module expects.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Exhaust pressure control valve sticking or restricted
  2. Actuator or linkage fault
  3. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Reduced exhaust-brake performance, if equipped
  • Possible reduced engine power
  • DPF regeneration problems or warning, where equipped

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check related exhaust-brake, actuator, or DPF codes for clues about when valve A failed to respond.
  2. Inspect the valve A body and accessible linkage for soot restriction, binding, damage, or a loose actuator connection.
  3. Check the valve A connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or intermittent contact.
  4. Use scan-tool live data or an actuator test, if supported, to compare commanded valve movement with its reported position or effect.
  5. Check the actuator and linkage for free movement using the vehicle's service procedure.
  6. Test the actuator circuit and valve response against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a sticking valve from a control or wiring problem.

Common fixes

  • Remove an obstruction or service a sticking valve as directed by vehicle service information.
  • Repair binding, loose, or damaged valve A linkage.
  • Clean and secure the valve A connector; repair damaged wiring.
  • Replace the faulty actuator or solenoid if it cannot move the valve as commanded.
  • Replace exhaust pressure control valve A if it remains mechanically restricted or fails its response test.

Can I keep driving?

If equipped with an exhaust brake, expect reduced braking assistance and use the service brakes with extra care. Avoid relying on the valve for downhill speed control, and address DPF warnings promptly because failed valve operation can interfere with regeneration.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
