OBD-II fault code

P0469: EVAP Purge Flow Sensor Circuit Intermittent

What it means

EVAP purge flow sensor signal jumps or drops out intermittently. The evaporative system captures fuel vapor from the tank and purges it into intake; leaks or stuck purge valves leak hydrocarbons and cause emissions failures.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The EVAP purge flow sensor measures vapor flow from the charcoal canister toward the engine so the control module can check purge operation. P0469 sets when that sensor's electrical signal repeatedly drops out or jumps, rather than remaining steady as purge conditions change.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live EVAP data to identify when the purge flow signal dropped out or changed abruptly.
  2. Inspect the purge flow sensor connector for corrosion, looseness, moisture, or terminals that lose contact under vibration.
  3. Check the sensor harness for chafing or contact with vibrating or hot components, then gently move it while monitoring live data.
  4. Check the circuit for intermittent opens or shorts and verify connector terminal fit using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. If the circuit remains stable, test the sensor for intermittent output against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded purge flow sensor connector.
  • Repair chafed wiring and secure the harness away from vibrating or hot parts.
  • Repair loose or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace the purge flow sensor if its signal drops out with a stable, verified circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible if the engine runs normally, but the EVAP system may not control fuel vapors correctly and emissions testing may be affected. Have it diagnosed soon, particularly if fuel odor or rough running develops.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
