What it means
EVAP purge flow sensor reads in range but plausibility check fails. The evaporative system captures fuel vapor from the tank and purges it into intake; leaks or stuck purge valves leak hydrocarbons and cause emissions failures.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP purge flow sensor measures vapor flow from the charcoal canister into the engine, allowing the control module to check whether purging matches its command. P0466 means the sensor signal is electrically plausible but its response or measured flow does not match the expected range or pattern.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor drift
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live EVAP data to compare commanded purge with the flow sensor reading when the fault occurred.
- Inspect the purge flow sensor mounting and connector for looseness, poor contact, or damage that could damp or distort its signal.
- Check EVAP hoses and connections around the sensor and purge valve for leaks, disconnection, or restriction.
- Observe whether the sensor reading changes smoothly as purge is commanded using the vehicle's supported scan-tool functions.
- If the plumbing and wiring are sound, test sensor response against the manufacturer's specification and replace it if it has drifted.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose purge flow sensor mounting or connector.
- Repair a leaking, disconnected, or restricted EVAP hose found during inspection.
- Repair damaged sensor wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace a drifting or aged purge flow sensor if its response fails the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally continue driving if the engine behaves normally, but the EVAP system may not control fuel vapors correctly and the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection. Have the fault checked soon, especially if a fuel odor or rough running appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
