OBD-II fault code

P0465: EVAP Purge Flow Sensor Circuit

What it means

A general electrical fault on the EVAP purge flow sensor — measures actual flow through the purge valve to verify the canister is being purged.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The EVAP purge flow sensor reports how much fuel vapor is moving from the charcoal canister toward the engine through the purge system. P0465 sets when the control module detects a general electrical fault in the sensor circuit, so it cannot reliably use the flow signal to check purge operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. EVAP purge flow sensor failure
  2. Open or short in sensor wiring
  3. Corroded or loose connector
  4. Fault in the control module

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and EVAP-related live data to note the conditions when the purge flow sensor circuit fault appeared.
  2. Inspect the purge flow sensor connector for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or damaged terminals.
  3. Trace the sensor wiring for breaks, pinching, or insulation damage, especially near the purge valve and hot engine parts.
  4. With a wiring diagram, check the sensor circuit for opens or shorts and verify its supply and ground as applicable to the vehicle.
  5. Test the purge flow sensor output against the manufacturer's specification before considering a control-module fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded purge flow sensor connector.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or damaged sensor wire.
  • Replace the EVAP purge flow sensor if its circuit is intact but its output is faulty.
  • Diagnose or repair a control-module fault only after the sensor and wiring checks pass.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible if the engine runs normally, but the check-engine light may indicate an emissions fault and the vehicle may fail an inspection. Arrange diagnosis soon, particularly if fuel odor or drivability symptoms develop.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
