OBD-II fault code

P045F: EGR B Control Stuck Closed

What it means

The control module detected that EGR control B is stuck closed or responding as though it is closed. This can reduce exhaust gas recirculation and affect emissions or engine operation.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

EGR control B meters exhaust gas back into the intake through the engine’s second EGR path, where fitted. P045F sets when the module detects that the valve remains closed, or behaves as if closed, when it should open, reducing exhaust-gas recirculation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Carbon buildup holds valve closed
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live EGR data to see when control B was commanded open and whether its position changed.
  2. Inspect the EGR B valve and passages for carbon or debris that could prevent the valve from opening.
  3. Use a scan tool to command EGR B open, if supported, and observe its position feedback and the engine’s response.
  4. Inspect the EGR B connector and wiring for breaks or poor contact that could prevent actuation or give a false closed reading.
  5. Test valve movement, actuator operation, and position feedback using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
  6. If the valve and circuit pass their checks, verify the module command and inspect the B-path passages for blockage.

Common fixes

  • Clean carbon or debris obstructing the EGR B valve or its passages according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connections at the EGR B actuator.
  • Replace an EGR B valve or actuator that fails to open or has worn internal parts.
  • Replace a failed position sensor only after confirming the valve and its mounting are sound.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration if the engine pings or loses power, and limit driving until the fault is diagnosed. A valve that stays closed can increase NOx emissions and may cause knock under load.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
