What it means
The control module detected that EGR control B is stuck open or responding as though it is open. This can allow excessive exhaust gas recirculation and affect engine operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
EGR control B meters exhaust gas back into the intake through the engine’s second EGR path, where fitted. P045E sets when the module detects that this valve is open, or behaving as if open, when it should be closed, allowing too much exhaust gas into the engine.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Carbon buildup holds valve open
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and EGR live data to see when the module detected control B as open and what it had commanded.
- Inspect the EGR B valve and nearby passages for carbon or debris that could hold the valve off its seat.
- Use a scan tool to command EGR B closed, if supported, and check whether its reported position or engine response indicates that it remains open.
- Inspect the valve connector and harness for damage or an electrical condition that could falsely report an open position.
- Check valve movement and position feedback using the manufacturer's procedure, comparing the result with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the valve moves freely and its feedback is credible, check the module command and related wiring using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Remove carbon or debris from the EGR B valve and passages using the manufacturer's service procedure.
- Repair a loose connector or damaged wiring that falsely indicates the valve is open.
- Replace an EGR B valve or actuator that sticks open or has excessive mechanical play.
- Replace a faulty position sensor only after confirming the valve movement and sensor mounting.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the engine idles roughly, misfires, or stalls, since an EGR B valve stuck open can disrupt combustion. If it runs smoothly, keep trips short and light until repaired; continued operation can worsen drivability and emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
