What it means
Fuel-level sensor A reads in range but plausibility check fails — value sticks, jumps, or does not match consumption.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Fuel level sensor A reports the level in the tank to the gauge or control module. P0461 sets when its signal stays within an electrical range but changes too slowly, jumps, sticks, or otherwise fails the module’s plausibility check as fuel is used or added.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Float arm sticks
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Fuel gauge reading fluctuates or seems inaccurate
- Fuel gauge responds slowly to refueling
- Low-fuel warning or range estimate may be unreliable
How to diagnose it
- Compare scan-tool fuel-level data with the actual tank level and check the freeze-frame conditions when the reading became implausible.
- Observe the gauge and live fuel-level reading during refueling or as the fuel level changes, looking for delayed response, jumps, or a value that stays fixed.
- Inspect the sender A connector and wiring for loose terminals or damage that could cause an intermittent signal.
- If accessible through the manufacturer's procedure, check whether the float arm moves freely and is not binding inside the tank.
- Test sensor A's signal across its operating range and compare its smoothness and readings with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the sender responds correctly, check the signal interpretation at the instrument cluster or control module.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sender A connector or repair its poor terminal contact.
- Free or replace a sticking float arm or sender assembly if it does not move smoothly.
- Replace fuel level sensor A if its output is unstable or outside the manufacturer's calibration range.
- Repair the receiving module or its connections only after verifying the sender signal at the module.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive if the engine runs normally, but treat the fuel gauge and range estimate as unreliable and avoid letting the tank run low. A stuck or delayed reading can hide how quickly fuel is being used.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
