OBD-II fault code

P042F: EGR A Control Stuck Closed

What it means

EGR A Control Stuck Closed: the control module has detected this fault condition. Without valid EGR feedback the ECU disables exhaust gas recirculation and may set further EGR codes.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The EGR A control system routes measured exhaust gas back into the intake to reduce combustion temperatures and nitrogen oxide emissions. The control module checks whether EGR flow or valve feedback follows its command; P042F sets when EGR A remains closed when the system expects it to open, often because deposits or wear restrict movement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Carbon buildup holds valve closed
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related EGR codes, noting engine load and the commanded and reported EGR A position.
  2. Inspect the EGR A valve connector, wiring, and accessible passages for damage, blockage, or carbon buildup.
  3. With a scan tool, command EGR A operation where supported and see whether position feedback or engine response changes.
  4. Check the valve and passage for carbon or mechanical binding that prevents the valve from opening.
  5. If the valve moves freely and passages are clear, test its actuator and feedback circuits against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean carbon from the EGR A valve and blocked passages if serviceable.
  • Repair a disconnected or damaged EGR A connector or wiring.
  • Replace the EGR A valve if it cannot open or its position feedback is faulty.
  • Repair a confirmed actuator or control-circuit fault.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive gently if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid heavy loads if it pings or hesitates. A closed EGR A valve can raise NOx emissions and contribute to inspection failure; stop if power loss makes driving unsafe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
