OBD-II fault code

P0445: Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted

What it means

The ECU detected a short in the EVAP purge solenoid control circuit. With the valve permanently energized or shorted, the system can either over-purge causing rich running, or stay closed.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The EVAP purge valve meters fuel vapour from the charcoal canister into the engine to be burned. The ECU monitors the purge solenoid’s electrical control circuit and sets P0445 when it detects a short, which can leave the valve commanded on or prevent normal control.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Purge valve circuit shorted
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Loose-cap warning may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check purge command and related EVAP codes to see when the circuit fault occurred.
  2. Inspect the purge valve connector and nearby wiring for damaged insulation, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with power or ground.
  3. With the valve disconnected, check its coil and control wiring for a short using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  4. Use a scan tool’s purge command, if supported, to see whether the valve responds and whether the circuit fault returns.
  5. If the valve and wiring pass, test the ECU driver according to the manufacturer's procedure before considering module replacement.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed or shorted purge-valve wiring.
  • Clean or repair a damaged purge-valve connector or terminal.
  • Replace a purge valve with an internally shorted solenoid.
  • Repair or replace the ECU only after its driver fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, a short trip is generally possible, but avoid driving if it runs rich, stalls, or you smell fuel strongly. Continued operation with excessive purging can worsen running problems, and the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
