OBD-II fault code

P0458: Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Low

What it means

The powertrain control module detected a low electrical signal in the EVAP purge control valve circuit. This indicates a circuit fault; it does not by itself confirm a vapor leak or a faulty valve.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The purge control valve opens to draw stored fuel vapor from the EVAP canister into the engine, and the control module monitors its electrical circuit. P0458 means the purge-valve circuit signal is lower than expected, pointing to an electrical problem such as a short to ground rather than proving that the valve is leaking vapor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Loose-cap warning may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and scan-tool data to see when the purge valve was commanded and whether the circuit fault is present now.
  2. Locate the EVAP purge valve and inspect its connector and harness for chafing, corrosion, loose pins, or damage near the engine.
  3. With the circuit monitored, move the connector and harness gently to check for a signal change or an intermittent short.
  4. Test the purge-valve control wire for a short to ground and check its power feed and connections using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specifications.
  5. If the circuit checks out, test the purge valve electrically and follow the manufacturer's procedure before suspecting the control module.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
  • Clean and secure corroded or loose purge-valve connector terminals.
  • Repair a faulty power feed or open connection in the purge-valve circuit.
  • Replace the purge valve if it fails the specified electrical test.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is generally driveable if it runs normally, but EVAP purge control may be unavailable and emissions testing may fail. If fuel odor is strong or the engine runs poorly, limit driving and address the fault promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
