What it means
Electrical fault in the EVAP purge solenoid circuit. The ECU detects an open, shorted, or out-of-range condition on the purge valve driver.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP purge control valve is an electrically operated solenoid that meters fuel vapour from the canister into the engine. P0443 means the control module has detected an electrical fault in the purge-solenoid circuit, but does not by itself distinguish an open, short, or other out-of-range condition.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Purge solenoid electrically failed
- Wiring/connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
- Failed emissions inspection
- Loose-cap warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Confirm P0443 and check for related EVAP or electrical codes, then note the freeze-frame conditions.
- Locate the purge solenoid using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
- Use a scan tool to command the purge solenoid and check whether the command is accepted and any available circuit status changes.
- With the circuit safely isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check solenoid winding continuity and inspect its wiring for opens and shorts.
- If the solenoid and wiring pass their tests, check the control-module driver and power supply according to the wiring diagram.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the purge-solenoid connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or corroded connector terminals in the purge circuit.
- Replace the purge solenoid if its winding fails the manufacturer's test.
- Repair the control-module driver only after confirming the solenoid and wiring are sound.
Can I keep driving?
P0443 usually does not cause limp mode, but the EVAP system may not control fuel vapour correctly and the vehicle may fail emissions testing. If the engine runs poorly or you smell fuel, avoid heavy use and arrange a prompt check.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
