What it means
The ECU detected an open circuit on the EVAP vent valve control. The vent valve is needed to seal the system for leak diagnostics; with the circuit open the leak test cannot complete.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP vent valve opens to admit air during normal canister operation and closes to seal the system for leak checks. P0447 means the ECU detects an open in the vent-valve control circuit, so it may be unable to operate the valve or complete the leak test.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Vent valve circuit open
- Wiring or connector fault
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
- Failed emissions inspection
- Loose-cap warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for other EVAP codes to identify whether the vent circuit fault appeared during a leak check.
- Inspect the vent valve connector, especially for a pushed-back pin, loose fit, corrosion, or water near the canister.
- Trace the vent-valve wiring for a break, damaged insulation, or a poor ground or power connection.
- Test circuit continuity and the valve coil using the manufacturer's procedure to locate the open.
- If the circuit and valve pass, check ECU control at the connector using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Reseat a pushed-back vent-valve terminal and secure the connector.
- Repair a broken wire or poor connection in the vent-valve circuit.
- Replace a vent valve with an open coil.
- Repair a confirmed ECU control fault.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is generally possible if the engine runs normally, but the EVAP leak check may not run and the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection. Investigate promptly if fuel vapour is noticeable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
