OBD-II fault code

P03F7: B Camshaft Position Actuator Position Sensor C Range/Performance (Bank 1)

What it means

B Camshaft Position Actuator Position Sensor C Range/Performance (Bank 1): the signal is implausible or outside the valid range. This relates to engine timing; a fault can cause rough running, a no-start, or timing errors.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 1 B camshaft position actuator position sensor C tells the engine control module where the profile actuator is. The module checks whether that signal is plausible; this code sets when the reported position falls outside the expected range or does not track the commanded movement correctly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor drift
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the Bank 1 sensor C position reading with the actuator command and cam timing in live data.
  2. Inspect the sensor C mounting and connector for looseness, contamination, corrosion, or movement that could make the signal unreliable.
  3. Check the Bank 1 harness for damage and make sure it is routed and secured so it cannot chafe or pull at the sensor.
  4. Use the manufacturer’s procedure to compare the sensor output with actuator movement and verify the signal remains plausible during a command.
  5. If mounting and wiring pass, test the sensor for drift and inspect the actuator mechanism for sticking or excess mechanical play.

Common fixes

  • Secure the Bank 1 sensor C mounting if it is loose.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact affecting the position signal.
  • Replace sensor C if its output is outside the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Repair a sticking or worn actuator mechanism if tests show it is preventing the expected movement.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently only if the engine remains smooth, and avoid heavy acceleration because actuator position feedback may be inaccurate and power can fall. Stop if the engine stalls or becomes very rough.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
