OBD-II fault code

P03E8: A Camshaft Position Actuator Position Sensor C Circuit High (Bank 1)

What it means

A Camshaft Position Actuator Position Sensor C Circuit High (Bank 1): the signal voltage is above the expected range. This relates to engine timing; a fault can cause rough running, a no-start, or timing errors.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 1 camshaft actuator position sensor C reports the position of the cam profile actuator to the engine control module. This code sets when its signal circuit reads higher than the module expects, which can prevent the module from confirming the selected cam position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open signal line
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare sensor C readings with the other cam actuator position data to see when the signal went high.
  2. Inspect the Bank 1 sensor C connector and harness for corrosion, loose or backed-out pins, and damage near hot or moving engine parts.
  3. With the wiring diagram, check whether the sensor C signal wire is open and whether its supply wire is pinched against a battery-positive source.
  4. Measure the sensor C supply, ground, and signal at the connector while the fault is present, comparing readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring and connections check out, test the sensor and actuator feedback circuit against the manufacturer's specification before replacing components.

Common fixes

  • Repair an open or damaged sensor C signal wire.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose pins at the Bank 1 sensor C connector.
  • Separate and repair a supply wire shorted to battery positive.
  • Replace the Bank 1 camshaft actuator position sensor C if testing confirms it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Short trips to a repair location may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid hard acceleration because the fault can reduce mid-range power. Stop driving if it stalls, runs very roughly, or becomes difficult to control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
