OBD-II fault code

P039E: Cylinder 1 Combustion Performance

What it means

The closed-loop combustion controller reports that combustion performance on cylinder 1 is below the calibrated quality metric. Computed from the cylinder pressure trace — IMEP (indicated mean effective pressure), CA50 (50% mass burnt angle) or peak pressure deviates from the model.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module evaluates cylinder 1 combustion using its pressure trace and measures such as work produced during the cycle and combustion timing. This code sets when the calculated combustion quality for cylinder 1 falls outside the calibrated range, which may reflect poor fuel delivery, low compression, or incorrect data reaching the controller.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector flow rate drift
  2. Low compression
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough running or engine misfire
  • Reduced power
  • Uneven acceleration

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and review cylinder 1 pressure, combustion-performance, and misfire readings.
  2. Compare cylinder 1 live data with the other cylinders to identify whether the problem follows that cylinder or appears across several cylinders.
  3. Inspect cylinder 1 injector and pressure-sensor connectors and wiring for damage or poor contact.
  4. Check cylinder 1 injector flow or operation and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test cylinder 1 compression if fueling and signal checks do not explain the poor combustion result.
  6. If cylinder 1 sensor and mechanical checks pass, check module communication and gateway message routing for missing or inconsistent cylinder data.

Common fixes

  • Repair loose or damaged cylinder 1 injector or pressure-sensor connections.
  • Correct injector flow drift or replace the cylinder 1 injector if testing confirms it.
  • Repair a cylinder 1 compression or sealing fault confirmed by testing.
  • Repair a confirmed communication or gateway routing fault affecting cylinder 1 data.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine is misfiring or lacks power, avoid high speeds and heavy loads until diagnosed. Continued poor combustion can increase fuel use and emissions and may damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
