OBD-II fault code

P03D0: Cylinder 6 Combustion Performance

What it means

The closed-loop combustion controller reports that combustion performance on cylinder 6 is below the calibrated quality metric. Computed from the cylinder pressure trace — IMEP (indicated mean effective pressure), CA50 (50% mass burnt angle) or peak pressure deviates from the model.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The combustion controller evaluates cylinder 6's pressure trace to judge how effectively that cylinder is burning fuel and producing work. This code sets when the calculated cylinder 6 combustion-performance result falls outside the calibrated range; injector drift is one possible cause, but communication faults should be checked only when other evidence points to them.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector flow rate drift
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough or uneven engine running
  • Misfire or hesitation
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare cylinder 6 pressure, misfire, and fueling readings with the other cylinders.
  2. Check for related codes and confirm that the cylinder 6 pressure signal is present and plausible in live data.
  3. Inspect cylinder 6 injector wiring and connector, then test injector delivery and control using the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. If injector delivery checks out, assess cylinder 6 compression and combustion quality against the manufacturer's specifications.
  5. If several modules or cylinders show communication-related faults, inspect network connections and module communication using vehicle-specific diagnostics.

Common fixes

  • Repair a damaged cylinder 6 injector connector or wiring fault.
  • Clean or replace a cylinder 6 injector that fails its flow or control test.
  • Repair a confirmed cylinder 6 mechanical or combustion fault.
  • Repair a verified vehicle-network or module communication fault if related evidence supports it.

Can I keep driving?

With rough running, hesitation, or reduced power, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon. Stop if the misfire becomes severe, since continued operation can damage the engine or emissions system.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
