OBD-II fault code

P03E4: Cylinder 8 Combustion Performance

What it means

The closed-loop combustion controller reports that combustion performance on cylinder 8 is below the calibrated quality metric. Computed from the cylinder pressure trace — IMEP (indicated mean effective pressure), CA50 (50% mass burnt angle) or peak pressure deviates from the model.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The ECM uses the cylinder 8 pressure trace to assess combustion performance, including how pressure develops during the firing cycle. This code sets when the calculated cylinder 8 combustion quality falls outside its expected range; possible causes include injector flow drift or a fault in the data path used to evaluate that cylinder.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector flow rate drift
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough running or misfire
  • Reduced engine power
  • Hesitation

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare cylinder 8 combustion performance and pressure trace with other cylinders at the same operating conditions.
  2. Check for cylinder 8 misfire or injector-related codes and inspect the injector connector and wiring for damage or poor contact.
  3. Test cylinder 8 injector operation and fuel delivery using the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Check for related communication or module codes and inspect the relevant network wiring and connectors before suspecting a control module.
  5. If injector and network checks pass, verify the cylinder 8 pressure sensor signal and combustion-control data using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged cylinder 8 injector connection.
  • Correct a confirmed cylinder 8 injector flow problem.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector faults affecting the pressure-signal or module communication path.
  • Replace a faulty cylinder 8 pressure sensor or repair a confirmed control-module fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly, drive gently and avoid heavy loads while arranging diagnosis. If it misfires, hesitates, or loses power, stop driving because continued poor combustion can raise emissions and damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
