OBD-II fault code

P039D: Cylinder 1 Pressure Variation High

What it means

Cylinder-to-cylinder pressure variation on cylinder 1 is above the calibrated maximum — combustion is unstable cycle-to-cycle, typical of partial misfire or injector seat erosion.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The cylinder 1 pressure sensor measures combustion pressure on each engine cycle, and the control module compares that pattern to assess consistency. This code sets when cylinder 1's cycle-to-cycle pressure variation is above the calibrated limit, which can reflect unstable combustion, a sensor fault, or uneven cylinder sealing.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Unstable combustion or partial misfire
  2. Faulty cylinder 1 pressure sensor
  3. Fuel injector fault
  4. Low compression in cylinder 1

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle or engine misfire
  • Shaking or vibration
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check cylinder 1 misfire counts and pressure variation under the conditions that set the code.
  2. Compare cylinder 1's live pressure trace with other cylinders to see whether the variation follows cylinder 1 or points to a sensor signal issue.
  3. Inspect the cylinder 1 pressure sensor connector, wiring, and injector wiring for damage, loose terminals, or poor contact.
  4. Check cylinder 1 injector operation for inconsistent fuel delivery and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Perform compression or leak-down testing on cylinder 1 if the signal and injector checks do not explain the unstable pressure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged cylinder 1 pressure-sensor or injector connection.
  • Repair chafed or broken wiring affecting cylinder 1 pressure or fuel delivery.
  • Clean or replace the cylinder 1 injector if testing confirms inconsistent operation.
  • Replace the cylinder 1 pressure sensor if its signal is faulty.
  • Repair a cylinder 1 compression or sealing problem confirmed by testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration if the engine shakes or misfires, and stop if the misfire becomes severe. Persistent unstable combustion can increase emissions and damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
