What it means
Air flow through diesel intake throttle A is lower than the commanded set point — flap stuck partly closed.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The diesel intake air flow A control system uses a throttle plate to regulate airflow through intake passage A. P02ED sets when measured airflow is below the module's commanded target, which can occur if the plate is stuck partly closed, restricted by carbon, or prevented from opening by a faulty actuator or linkage; a sensor or wiring fault can also under-report airflow.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intake throttle plate sticking partly closed
- Restricted or carbon-fouled intake throttle
- Faulty actuator or linkage preventing the plate from opening fully
- Airflow sensor or wiring reporting an incorrect low reading
Symptoms
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Rough or uneven engine response
- Poorer fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live commanded A throttle position against measured airflow to confirm that airflow falls short when the plate should open.
- Inspect the A throttle plate for carbon or restriction and check whether the linkage and actuator allow it to open through its commanded range.
- Check the intake path for blockage that could restrict airflow through throttle A.
- Inspect the airflow sensor connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could produce a falsely low reading.
- Use the manufacturer's procedure to compare sensor readings and actuator movement, then distinguish a true restriction from a reporting fault.
Common fixes
- Remove carbon or debris restricting the A throttle plate using the manufacturer's approved procedure.
- Repair a sticking plate, faulty actuator, or restricted linkage that prevents full opening.
- Clear an intake restriction affecting airflow through throttle A.
- Repair sensor wiring or replace the airflow sensor if testing confirms it reports low.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and towing because restricted airflow can cause sluggish response and reduced power. If the engine stalls or cannot keep up safely with traffic, pull over and arrange repair before continuing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
