What it means
Motor current draw of the diesel intake throttle A actuator does not match the calibrated map for the commanded position — high friction, partial short, or stiction from carbon.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The diesel intake air flow A actuator motor moves the A intake throttle plate when commanded by the control module. P02EB sets when the motor's current draw does not match the expected pattern for the commanded position, which can result from a faulty motor, binding or carbon-restricted throttle, or damaged wiring.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intake air flow control actuator motor fault
- Binding or restricted intake throttle mechanism
- Damaged actuator wiring or connector
Symptoms
- Reduced engine power or slower acceleration
- Rough or uneven engine response
- Poorer fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live commanded versus actual A throttle position to see when the current or movement mismatch occurs.
- Inspect the A actuator connector and wiring for damage, loose terminals, corrosion, or signs of overheating.
- Use a scan tool's supported actuator test to command the A throttle through its range and watch for slow, uneven, or incomplete movement.
- With the engine off and following the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the A throttle mechanism for carbon buildup or binding that could raise motor load.
- Measure actuator motor current and check its wiring against the manufacturer's specifications to distinguish a motor fault from a circuit problem.
Common fixes
- Repair a damaged or poorly connected A actuator wire or connector.
- Clean carbon from the A throttle mechanism using the vehicle manufacturer's approved procedure.
- Repair a binding throttle mechanism or linkage.
- Replace the A intake air flow control actuator motor if its current draw remains out of specification.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs steadily, use gentle throttle and avoid heavy loads until the A actuator is checked. Stop if power drops sharply or the engine stalls, since the throttle may not follow its commanded position.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
