OBD-II fault code

P02E0: Diesel Intake Air Flow Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control module detected an open circuit or other circuit fault in the diesel intake air flow control system. This code does not specify a particular valve design or prove that airflow is physically blocked.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The diesel intake air flow control system uses an actuator to adjust airflow into the engine; designs vary by vehicle. The control module monitors the actuator circuit and sets this code when it detects an open circuit or related electrical fault, which does not prove that the intake passage itself is blocked.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator winding open
  2. Open wire to actuator
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
  • Rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check related intake actuator codes and available command or position data to identify the conditions when the circuit fault occurred.
  2. With the engine off, inspect the intake air flow control actuator connector for a loose fit, corrosion, damaged terminals, or a pin pushed back into the connector.
  3. Trace the actuator wiring for breaks, chafing, heat damage, or loose connections between the actuator and control module.
  4. Check circuit continuity and for opens using the manufacturer’s wiring diagram and test procedure.
  5. If the wiring and connector are intact, test the actuator winding and module output according to the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Seat the actuator connector fully and secure it.
  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the intake air flow control circuit.
  • Repair or replace a connector with a pushed-back, corroded, or damaged terminal.
  • Replace the actuator if its winding is confirmed open.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle trip may be possible if the engine runs normally, but reduced power, rough running, or stalling can make driving unpredictable. Avoid heavy acceleration and stop if the engine stalls or power loss makes it unsafe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
