OBD-II fault code

P02EA: Diesel Intake Air Flow A Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

Position sensor signal jumps or drops out intermittently — connector or harness issue. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The diesel intake air flow A position sensor reports the position of intake control A to the engine control module. P02EA sets when that sensor signal is erratic or briefly interrupted; a vibrating loose connector, water ingress, pin push-back, or harness rubbing against a vibrating part can cause the signal to jump or drop out.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Reduced engine power or slower acceleration
  • Rough or uneven engine response
  • Poorer fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live intake air flow A position data to look for sudden jumps or dropouts and note the engine conditions when they occur.
  2. Inspect the A position sensor connector seals, terminals, and harness routing for moisture, pin push-back, chafing, or contact with a vibrating component.
  3. With live data active, gently wiggle the A sensor connector and harness to see whether the position signal changes.
  4. Check the A sensor signal, supply, and ground circuits for intermittent opens or poor terminal contact using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the connection and wiring are secure, test the A position sensor output through its movement range against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the A position sensor connector.
  • Dry and repair a connector affected by water ingress, including damaged seals or terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring and reroute it away from vibrating parts.
  • Replace the A position sensor if its output remains erratic with sound wiring and connections.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only if engine response remains predictable, and avoid hard acceleration or situations where sudden loss of power would be hazardous. Stop safely if it stalls or the intake control response becomes erratic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
