OBD-II fault code

P0247: Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate Actuator B

What it means

The control circuit for wastegate solenoid B reports a voltage below the expected range. Likely a short to ground, open winding or wiring fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Wastegate solenoid B is an electrically controlled valve used to regulate boost. The control module monitors its circuit and sets P0247 when the circuit voltage is below the expected range, which can occur with a ground short, an open winding, or a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wastegate solenoid B defective
  2. Wiring shorted to ground
  3. Connector corroded

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Significant power loss / limp mode
  • Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
  • Whistling or hissing sound from intake

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and check for other boost-control codes to see when the solenoid B fault occurred.
  2. Inspect solenoid B’s connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or a wire contacting ground.
  3. Check the solenoid B winding and circuit continuity against the manufacturer’s specification to identify an open winding or broken wire.
  4. Test the circuit for an unintended short to ground and inspect connector contact quality while monitoring the relevant signal.
  5. If the wiring and solenoid test correctly, follow the manufacturer’s procedure to check the control-module output.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair corroded or loose solenoid B connector terminals.
  • Repair wiring shorted to ground or an open in the solenoid B circuit.
  • Replace wastegate solenoid B if its winding or operation fails the specified test.
  • Repair the control-module output circuit only if testing confirms a module fault.

Can I keep driving?

Keep acceleration and boost demand low because the vehicle may have reduced power or enter limp mode. Avoid driving if it cannot maintain safe road speed or produces heavy smoke.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
