What it means
The control module monitors the electrical signal from the fuel rail pressure sensor on bank 2. It sets this code when the sensor circuit has an electrical fault, such as a signal outside the expected electrical range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The fuel rail pressure sensor on bank 2 converts pressure in that bank's fuel rail into an electrical signal for the control module. This circuit code indicates an electrical fault in the bank 2 sensor circuit, such as an abnormal signal or a problem with its power, ground, connector, or wiring; it does not identify a pressure problem by itself.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Failed fuel rail pressure sensor
- Damaged or corroded connector
- Open or shorted wiring
- Fault in the sensor power or ground circuit
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard starting or extended cranking
- Rough running or stalling
- Reduced engine power
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare bank 2 fuel-rail pressure sensor data with commanded pressure and any corresponding bank 1 data, if available.
- Locate the bank 2 fuel rail pressure sensor using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for damage, corrosion, loose fit, or fuel contamination.
- Check the sensor's power and ground connections and inspect the signal terminal for pushed-back or poorly seated pins.
- Compare the bank 2 sensor signal and reported pressure with the manufacturer's specification under the conditions captured in the freeze frame.
- If the wiring checks pass, test the bank 2 sensor and related circuit for open or short conditions before considering sensor replacement.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose bank 2 sensor connector and clean serviceable terminals.
- Repair damaged wiring or restore a faulty power or ground connection to the bank 2 sensor.
- Replace corroded or damaged bank 2 connector terminals.
- Replace the bank 2 fuel rail pressure sensor if it fails the manufacturer's tests.
Can I keep driving?
Hard starting, stalling, or reduced power can make the vehicle unpredictable, so avoid high-speed or heavy-load driving and stop if the engine stalls or loses substantial power. Fuel-rail systems can retain hazardous pressure; use the vehicle's specified precautions before opening fuel-system connections.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
