OBD-II fault code

P0177: Fuel Composition Sensor Circuit Range / Performance

What it means

The flex-fuel composition sensor signal is within electrical limits but does not match expected values for the current fuel mix or rate-of-change is implausible.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The flex-fuel composition sensor tells the ECU how much ethanol is in the fuel so it can adjust engine operation. P0177 sets when the sensor signal is present but its reported composition or change over time does not fit the ECU’s expected range or behavior.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor drifted out of calibration
  2. Fuel contaminated (water, dirt)

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard starting or rough running
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live fuel-composition readings to see whether the value is implausible or changes unexpectedly.
  2. Ask whether the fuel was recently refilled or the tank contents changed, and check for signs of contaminated fuel.
  3. Inspect the flex-fuel sensor connector, wiring, and mounting for loose contacts, damage, or an installation problem.
  4. Compare the sensor output with scan-tool data and check whether the reading stabilizes as fuel circulates.
  5. If the reading remains implausible, test the sensor and assess the fuel sample using suitable procedures and the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Correct a loose or poorly seated flex-fuel sensor connection.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector contacts affecting the sensor signal.
  • Address contaminated fuel using an appropriate fuel-system service.
  • Replace a drifting flex-fuel composition sensor if testing confirms it reports inaccurate values.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, drive gently and arrange diagnosis soon; avoid strenuous driving if it hesitates or starts poorly. Incorrect ethanol estimates can lead to poor fueling, reduced performance, and increased emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
