What it means
The flex-fuel composition sensor signal exceeds the maximum threshold. Likely shorted to voltage, open ground or failed sensor.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The flex-fuel composition sensor sends a signal that lets the ECU estimate the fuel’s ethanol content. P0179 sets when the signal rises above the ECU’s expected upper limit, which can be caused by a short to voltage, an open ground, or a failed sensor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Sensor failed
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard starting or rough running
- Reduced engine performance
- Poor fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data to confirm that fuel-composition sensor input is high or implausible.
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose or pushed-back pins, and signal-wire contact with a voltage source.
- Check sensor power and ground connections, then test the signal wire for shorts to voltage and the ground circuit for an open using the manufacturer's specifications.
- Move the harness gently while watching live data to identify a changing connection or short.
- If the wiring checks pass, test the sensor output and replace the flex-fuel sensor only if it continues to report a high signal.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose flex-fuel sensor connector or repair poor terminal contact.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to voltage or damaged harness insulation.
- Restore an open or high-resistance sensor ground confirmed by testing.
- Replace the flex-fuel composition sensor if it fails output testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, a short, gentle trip may be possible, but avoid driving if it stalls, hesitates severely, or loses power. The incorrect composition signal can disrupt fueling and worsen emissions or drivability.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
