OBD-II fault code

P0178: Fuel Composition Sensor Circuit Low Input

What it means

The flex-fuel composition sensor signal is below the minimum threshold. Likely shorted to ground, open circuit or failed sensor.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The flex-fuel composition sensor sends an electrical signal that the ECU uses to estimate ethanol content. P0178 sets when that signal falls below the ECU’s expected lower limit, which can result from a short to ground, a sensor fault, or a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Sensor failed
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard starting or rough running
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live fuel-composition readings to confirm the sensor input is low or absent.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion, pushed-back pins, moisture, or a loose fit, and examine the signal wire for chafing against ground.
  3. Check the sensor circuit’s power and ground, then test signal-wire continuity and shorts to ground according to the manufacturer's specifications.
  4. Wiggle the harness while monitoring the signal to help locate an intermittent short or poor connector contact.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the flex-fuel sensor output and replace the sensor only if its signal remains below range.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose connector terminals if they can be safely restored.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or damaged harness insulation.
  • Correct a poor sensor ground or power connection confirmed by testing.
  • Replace the flex-fuel composition sensor if it fails the circuit and output checks.

Can I keep driving?

A gentle short drive may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but stop driving if it stalls or becomes difficult to control in traffic. The ECU may use an incorrect fuel-composition estimate, causing poor running and increased emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
