OBD-II fault code

P016E: Closed Loop Fuel Pressure Control At Limit - Pressure Too High

What it means

Closed-loop fuel pressure control hit its lower limit because rail pressure is structurally too high.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The module compares measured fuel rail pressure with its target and adjusts the pump or pressure control valve. P016E sets when pressure stays too high even after the module has reached its lower correction limit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel pressure regulator or control valve stuck
  2. Fuel pump delivering excessive pressure
  3. Fuel pressure sensor reading incorrectly
  4. Restricted fuel return line
  5. Damaged wiring or poor connector contact

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live data for measured versus commanded rail pressure, including when the high reading occurs.
  2. Inspect the pressure sensor connector and wiring and look for damaged fuel lines or a restricted return path.
  3. Compare measured pressure with the manufacturer's specification and check whether the reading changes plausibly as pressure is commanded to decrease.
  4. Test the regulator or control valve for proper response and check for a restricted fuel return line.
  5. Verify the pressure sensor signal and pump output before replacing the sensor, pump, or control component.

Common fixes

  • Repair a restricted fuel return line where applicable.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor pressure sensor connector.
  • Replace a pressure regulator or control valve that fails response testing.
  • Replace a pressure sensor or address excessive pump output only after confirming the fault by testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the engine stalls, struggles to start, or loses power under load, since pressure can remain unstable. Do not continue if you smell fuel or see a leak; have the system checked promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
