What it means
Closed-loop fuel pressure control hit its upper limit because rail pressure is structurally too low.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The module compares measured fuel rail pressure with its target and commands the pump or pressure control valve to correct it. P016F sets when pressure remains too low even after the module reaches its upper correction limit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fuel pump weak or worn
- Fuel pressure regulator or control valve malfunction
- Restricted fuel filter or supply line
- Fuel pressure sensor reading incorrectly
- Fuel leak or air entering the fuel supply
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
- Power loss especially at high load or rpm
- Possible long cranking time
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame and live data for measured versus commanded rail pressure, and note whether pressure falls during cranking or under load.
- Inspect the fuel system and pressure sensor wiring for visible leaks, damage, loose connectors, or signs of air entering the supply.
- Compare measured pressure with the manufacturer's specification at startup and under load.
- Check for a restricted fuel filter or supply line if pressure is low or drops as demand rises.
- Test the pump, regulator or control valve, and pressure sensor circuit to find the cause before replacing components.
Common fixes
- Repair a confirmed fuel leak or air entry in the supply.
- Replace a restricted fuel filter or repair a restricted supply line where serviceable.
- Repair damaged wiring or a poor pressure sensor connector.
- Replace a weak pump or faulty regulator, control valve, or sensor only when testing identifies it.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the engine stalls, is difficult to start, or loses power under load; low pressure can cause sudden loss of power in traffic. If symptoms are mild, avoid high loads and arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
