OBD-II fault code

P010D: Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor B Circuit High

What it means

The module detects a high input from the mass or volume air flow sensor B circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Mass or volume air flow sensor B measures incoming air on the second sensor or airflow path in vehicles that use two sensors. The module monitors its signal circuit and sets P010D when the input is higher than expected, which can happen with an open signal circuit, a poor connection, or an electrical short to a power source.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire open
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Reduced engine power or poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and sensor B live data to confirm that the signal is high and identify the conditions when it occurs.
  2. Inspect sensor B's connector and wiring for loose or corroded terminals, broken conductors, and insulation damaged near power wiring.
  3. Check the intake path served by sensor B for leaks or other conditions that could affect the airflow reading.
  4. Using the vehicle's circuit information, test the sensor B signal wire for an open circuit or an unintended connection to battery power.
  5. Check sensor B's supply, ground, and signal against the manufacturer's specification to separate a wiring fault from a failed sensor.

Common fixes

  • Repair an open signal wire in sensor B's circuit.
  • Restore damaged or corroded connections at sensor B's connector.
  • Repair wiring shorted to a power source and secure the harness away from it.
  • Correct an intake leak affecting sensor B's reading.
  • Replace sensor B if the circuit is intact but its output remains above specification.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally, keep trips short and avoid hard acceleration until the circuit is checked. If it hesitates or loses power, stop when safe; an implausibly high sensor B signal can interfere with fueling and emissions control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
