OBD-II fault code

P010B: Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor B Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The module detects a mass or volume air flow sensor B reading outside the expected range or inconsistent with engine operating conditions.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Mass or volume air flow sensor B measures incoming air in a system that uses a second airflow sensor. The module checks whether sensor B's reading is plausible for engine speed and load; P010B sets when the signal is present but falls outside the expected range or does not track operating conditions properly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. MAF B contaminated
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Reduced engine power or poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and compare sensor B's live airflow reading with engine speed, throttle, and load to find when it becomes implausible.
  2. Inspect sensor B's mounting, connector, and nearby intake ducting for looseness that could disturb the airflow signal.
  3. Check the sensor element and air filter path for oil, dirt, or other contamination that could skew sensor B's measurement.
  4. Look for air leaks or restrictions in the intake path measured by sensor B and correct them before judging the sensor.
  5. Compare sensor B's output and circuit operation with the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a drifting sensor from an airflow or wiring problem.

Common fixes

  • Secure loose sensor B mounting or intake connections.
  • Replace a clogged air filter or correct a restriction in sensor B's intake path.
  • Clean sensor B only with a product and method approved for that sensor.
  • Repair an intake leak affecting sensor B's airflow reading.
  • Replace sensor B if its readings remain outside specification after airflow and mounting issues are corrected.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, limit driving to necessary short trips and avoid heavy acceleration. Hesitation or poor power can make merging or passing unsafe, and the incorrect airflow reading can increase fuel use and emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
