What it means
The module detects an intermittent or erratic signal from the mass or volume air flow sensor B circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Mass or volume air flow sensor B measures incoming air on the second sensor or airflow path in a multi-sensor system. The module watches for a consistent signal and sets P010E when sensor B's reading becomes erratic or cuts in and out, often as vibration moves a loose connection or damaged wire.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Connector loose or corroded
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Intermittent rough idle or hesitation
- Intermittent loss of engine power
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and graph sensor B's live airflow signal to look for brief dropouts or jumps.
- Inspect sensor B's connector for a loose fit, corrosion, or terminals that may lose contact under vibration.
- Check the sensor B harness for chafing and confirm it is not touching a vibrating, hot, or moving component.
- With the engine running where safe, gently move the connector and harness while monitoring sensor B's signal for interruptions.
- Test sensor B's wiring and output against the manufacturer's specification, including during conditions that reproduce the intermittent fault.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor B connector and ensure its terminals fit properly.
- Clean or repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
- Repair chafed wiring and reroute or secure the harness away from vibration and heat.
- Replace sensor B if its output remains erratic with a sound connector and wiring.
Can I keep driving?
If the fault is intermittent and the engine still runs normally, limit driving and avoid high-speed or high-load trips. Stop when safe if power cuts out or the engine runs roughly, since the loss of sensor B's signal can recur without warning.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
