OBD-II fault code

P010A: Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor B Circuit

What it means

The powertrain control module detects a fault in the mass or volume air flow sensor B circuit. The code identifies a circuit fault; the cause may be the sensor, its wiring, or its connections.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Mass or volume air flow sensor B measures incoming air for one of the engine's airflow paths or banks, where the vehicle uses separate sensors. The powertrain control module monitors sensor B's electrical circuit and sets P010A when it detects a circuit fault, which may come from the sensor, its connections, or airflow conditions affecting its reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Failed mass or volume air flow sensor B
  2. Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
  3. Air leak or restriction affecting airflow readings

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Reduced engine power or poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame data and live data to identify when the fault occurred and compare sensor B's airflow reading with engine speed and load.
  2. Locate sensor B using vehicle service information, then inspect its connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose contact.
  3. Check the intake ducting and air filter path associated with sensor B for leaks, loose joints, or restrictions that could distort airflow.
  4. Inspect sensor B for contamination or physical damage, following the manufacturer's guidance for handling and cleaning.
  5. Test sensor B's circuit and airflow signal against the manufacturer's specification before deciding whether the sensor or wiring has failed.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose sensor B connector and secure its wiring.
  • Repair damaged wiring or corroded connector terminals at sensor B.
  • Correct an intake leak or restriction affecting the airflow measured by sensor B.
  • Replace sensor B if its circuit and readings fail testing after connection and airflow issues are addressed.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and power is normal, a short trip to a repair location may be reasonable. Avoid demanding acceleration if it hesitates or loses power, and limit driving because poor airflow measurement can worsen fuel economy and emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
