What it means
The Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 reading for Bank 1 is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 reports the temperature of intake air at a second sensing point, whose location depends on the vehicle. The control module sets P0096 when that reading is implausible or does not change as expected, indicating a range or performance problem rather than simply a low or high circuit signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor reading drifted
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Poor fuel economy
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Hard starting in some conditions
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data for Sensor 2, checking whether its temperature is plausible for the conditions and changes smoothly as the engine warms.
- After a cold soak, compare Sensor 2 with ambient temperature and other available intake-temperature readings to spot drift or a reading that remains fixed.
- Inspect the Sensor 2 mounting and connector for looseness, poor seating, corrosion, or damage that could affect its response.
- Check the Sensor 2 wiring and signal against the manufacturer's procedure to rule out circuit resistance or connection problems.
- If the wiring and mounting are sound, test Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 and replace it only if it falls outside the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Secure Sensor 2 correctly if it is loose or poorly mounted.
- Clean or repair a corroded or loose Sensor 2 connector.
- Repair wiring that is causing an inaccurate or delayed signal.
- Replace Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 if its response is out of specification.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive if the engine runs normally, but inaccurate Sensor 2 data may worsen fuel economy or cause hesitation. Avoid demanding driving if symptoms are pronounced.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
