What it means
The control module monitors the front half shaft speed sensor signal. It sets this code when the sensor circuit or signal has a detected fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The front half shaft speed sensor reports rotation speed from the front half shaft so the control module can track wheel or drivetrain behavior. The module monitors the sensor signal and sets C0633 when the signal or its circuit is faulty, which can disrupt ABS or stability calculations.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Failed speed sensor
- Damaged wiring or poor connection
- Corroded connector
- Damage or contamination affecting the sensor target
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read the ABS or chassis module freeze-frame data and compare front half shaft speed with other available wheel-speed readings.
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness along the front half shaft for looseness, corrosion, rubbing, or impact damage.
- Check the sensor and its target area for contamination, damage, or debris that could interfere with the signal.
- With a scan tool, compare live front half shaft speed readings while rotating the wheel or driving only under safe conditions.
- Test the sensor circuit and sensor output using the manufacturer's procedure before replacing the sensor.
Common fixes
- Clean contamination from the sensor or target area if appropriate for the component.
- Repair damaged or loose sensor wiring and connector terminals.
- Correct a damaged or misaligned sensor target if confirmed by inspection.
- Replace the front half shaft speed sensor if its signal fails the specified test.
Can I keep driving?
ABS or stability control may be disabled or respond incorrectly, so leave extra stopping distance and avoid hard braking or slippery conditions. If the speedometer becomes erratic or braking warnings appear, limit driving and arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
