OBD-II fault code

C0609: Park Brake Switch Circuit

What it means

The control module monitors the park brake switch circuit for a valid signal. It sets this code when the circuit signal is faulty or outside the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light

How it works

The park brake switch reports whether the park brake is applied or released so the brake control module can use the correct status. C0609 sets when the switch circuit signal is invalid or outside its expected range, which can result from a failed switch, damaged wiring, or a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty park brake switch
  2. Damaged wiring or poor connection
  3. Corroded connector
  4. Control module fault

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live park brake switch status while applying and releasing the park brake.
  2. Confirm that the park brake operates and that the dashboard indication changes consistently with its applied and released positions.
  3. Inspect the switch connector and nearby wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, damage, or poor routing.
  4. Test the switch for the expected state changes and check its circuit wiring using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Consider a control module fault only after the switch, wiring, and connector have passed their checks.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a corroded or loose switch connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor circuit connections.
  • Replace a park brake switch that fails to change state correctly.
  • Repair or replace the control module only if testing confirms a module fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the park brake releases fully and the brakes feel normal, drive cautiously and allow extra room because stability or brake-assist functions may be limited. Do not drive if the park brake remains applied or braking feels abnormal.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
