What it means
The control module monitors the steering wheel angle sensor signal for expected operation. It sets this code when the signal’s performance is outside the accepted range or does not agree with expected steering movement.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The steering wheel angle sensor tells the control module how the driver is steering so stability control can compare the intended direction with vehicle motion. C0608 sets when the angle signal behaves outside the accepted range or does not track steering movement as expected, including after an incorrect learned center or an alignment issue.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Steering angle sensor fault
- Incorrect sensor calibration or learned center
- Damaged wiring or poor connection
- Steering or alignment issue affecting the reading
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch live steering angle data while turning the wheel gradually in both directions for smooth, plausible movement.
- Check whether the reported angle returns consistently near the same center position when the wheels are straight.
- Inspect the sensor wiring and connectors for damage, loose pins, corrosion, or intermittent contact.
- Check for steering or alignment problems that could leave the wheel off-center or distort the sensor reading.
- If the mechanical and wiring checks pass, test the sensor and perform the manufacturer's steering angle calibration procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure poor connector contacts.
- Correct a confirmed steering or alignment issue affecting the reading.
- Calibrate or relearn the steering wheel center using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Replace a faulty steering angle sensor if its signal remains implausible after circuit and calibration checks.
Can I keep driving?
Stability control may be unavailable, so drive cautiously and leave extra room for braking and turns, especially on slippery roads. Avoid abrupt maneuvers and get the fault checked soon; stop if braking feels abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
