OBD-II fault code

C0606: Steering Wheel Angle Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

Steering wheel angle sensor signal voltage below expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The steering wheel angle sensor reports how far and in which direction the steering wheel is turned so stability systems can assess the driver's intended path. C0606 sets when the sensor signal falls below the module's expected range, often because the signal is being pulled toward ground or a connection has excessive resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • ABS or stability-control warning light on
  • Stability control may be disabled

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live steering angle data while turning the wheel slowly to see whether the reading is absent, low, or drops out.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and nearby harness for chafing, moisture, loose terminals, or a wire contacting ground.
  3. Gently move the harness while monitoring the live angle reading to check for an intermittent change.
  4. Check the sensor's power, ground, and signal circuits using the manufacturer's wiring information and test procedure.
  5. If the circuit checks pass, test the steering angle sensor and verify its calibration using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or damaged by chafing.
  • Clean and secure corroded or loose connector terminals.
  • Repair a poor ground or other confirmed wiring fault.
  • Replace a faulty steering wheel angle sensor and perform required calibration.

Can I keep driving?

Because stability control may be disabled, drive cautiously and allow extra stopping and maneuvering distance, especially on slippery roads. Avoid high speeds or abrupt steering, and have the fault checked promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
