OBD-II fault code

C05FE: 4WD/AWD Range Actuator Position Sensor Circuit High

What it means

4WD/AWD Range Actuator Position Sensor Circuit High: the signal voltage is above the expected range. This affects engagement of the all-wheel-drive clutch.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The 4WD/AWD range actuator position sensor reports the transfer-case actuator's position to the control module. This code sets when the sensor signal voltage rises above the expected range, which can leave the module unable to verify range position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • 4WD/AWD range selection may be limited or disabled

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live sensor data for a high or fixed position signal, and note whether other actuator circuit codes are stored.
  2. Inspect the position sensor harness for a wire pinched against a power source, damaged insulation, water intrusion, or corroded or pushed-back connector pins.
  3. Watch the scan-tool signal while gently moving the accessible harness to identify an intermittent short to power or poor connection.
  4. Using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure, test the signal circuit for an unintended connection to battery voltage and verify its connections.
  5. If wiring is sound, test the position sensor and actuator, then assess the control module input only after those checks.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring pinched against a power source or otherwise shorted to battery voltage.
  • Clean or repair damaged, corroded, or pushed-back connector terminals.
  • Replace a position sensor confirmed to produce an excessively high signal.
  • Replace a faulty actuator or control module only when testing confirms the component failure.

Can I keep driving?

Range selection may be limited because the system cannot verify actuator position. Avoid relying on low range or repeated shift attempts; drive cautiously if the current range is suitable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
