OBD-II fault code

C05FD: 4WD/AWD Range Actuator Position Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

4WD/AWD Range Actuator Position Sensor Circuit Low: the signal voltage is below the expected range. This affects engagement of the all-wheel-drive clutch.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The 4WD/AWD range actuator position sensor reports the transfer-case actuator's position to the control module. This code sets when the sensor signal voltage falls below the expected range, which can make the module unable to confirm the selected range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • 4WD/AWD range selection may be limited or disabled

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live sensor data for a low or missing position signal, and note any related sensor supply or actuator codes.
  2. Inspect the position sensor wiring and connector for insulation worn through to ground, corrosion, water, or loose terminals.
  3. With the signal monitored, gently move the harness to see whether contact with ground causes the reading to fall further or recover intermittently.
  4. Using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure, test the sensor signal, ground, and reference circuit for a short to ground or excessive resistance.
  5. If the circuit checks out, test the position sensor and actuator before considering a control module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed signal wiring that is shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose sensor connector terminals.
  • Replace a position sensor that produces a low signal despite a verified circuit.
  • Replace a faulty actuator or control module only after circuit and sensor tests confirm the failure.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may not confirm or change 4WD/AWD range, so avoid routes that depend on low range. Drive cautiously if the current range is known to be engaged, and do not repeatedly command shifts.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
